A big day overnight for Joe Root as the youngster scored his maiden test century at his home ground in Leeds. The man who finally got his wicket? Trent Boult, with his first delivery with the new ball in the last session.

Meanwhile the Blackcaps’ one-day players not involved in the test are playing a “warm-up” in 7 degrees at the Finedon Dolben club in Northamptonshire…

The Daniel Vettori intrigue is over: the Blackcaps have instead welcomed back Doug Bracewell into their test XI after Dan didn’t feel he was up to the crunch game after the final pre-test training overnight.
